Do It Yourself or Do It Ourselves?
My brother and I were raised by a single mother. My mom was very hands-on, maybe because life forced her to be that way to survive. She had her workshop at home, where she had many tools, a saw, an axe, and a welding plant. If we needed a piece of furniture at home, she would build it. Or if we needed to fix the pipes or tear down a wall, she did it, and we were her crew.
At times, he miscalculated the consequences of his decisions. Certain projects were more complex than she estimated, but she managed to figure life out overall.
As a child, I read Tú, the first Latin American magazine that spoke to young women closely about their problems, lifestyle, fashion, and love affairs. One of the best things about this magazine created by Gina Diez Barroso was its DIY fashion section, where they showed you how to intervene in your clothes to make them fashionable and make your accessories without spending a lot. I had the DIY attitude from the cradle, and I reinforced it with this magazine, which was my bible for life for many years.
